Tantalum is dark, dense, ductile, very hard, easily fabricated, and highly conductive of heat and electricity.
It has a melting point exceeded only by tungsten and rhenium.
As a high melting point metal, tantalum possesses a low vapour pressure and good electrical and thermal conductivity up to very high temperature.

Tantalum can be used as a replacement for platinum in laboratory instruments, but the laboratory instruments must have good corrosion resistance. Liquids in the human body do not react with metals and will not cause rejection when used in surgical implants. It is also used as an alloying element, for example with nickel and molybdenum to produce alloys with good corrosion resistance, strength and ductility.
